A driver and a conductor of Super Metro Matatu were on Tuesday separately charged with traffic related offenses after their vehicle was caught making a wrong U-turn and driving the wrong side of the road along Thika Super Highway.
John Thiong’o who was the driver was charged driving a public service vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, causing obstruction and failing to secure the safety of passengers in the vehicle by turning on the highway while the door was open.
The prosecution asked the court to consider the gravity of the offense while granting bond to the driver.
“He has been charged with driving on the wrong side of Thika Super Highway and he has no fixture of aboard. In granting bail or bond, the court should consider public interest by imposing stringent terms,” argued the prosecution.
Senior principal magistrate Geoffery Onsarigo released him on sh 1 million bond or pay a cash bail sh 300,000 with two contact persons.
His conductor Kelvin Wanjua was charged separately with riding in a dangerous position, failing to ensure the safety of passengers and acting as a conductor without a conductor’s license.

The prosecution while reading the facts of the case noted that on March 4, 2022, he was riding in motor vehicle, a minibus of super metro sacco, along the Thika Superhighway.
The vehicle was being driven by Thiongo who made a sharp and dangerous U-turn while his motor vehicle was loaded with passenger. It was flagged by officers from central police and upon interrogation Wanjua who was acting as a conductor, did not possess the conductor’s public service license.
He was released on a bond of sh 300,000 or an alternative cash bail of shs 100,000.
