A Kenyan man who is wanted in the US for allegedly killing his girlfriend has been detained for 30 days for police to conclude investigations.
Kevin Kang’ethe allegedly killed Margaret Mbitu, a nurse, last year in October and stashed her body in a car boot then booked a ticket to Kenya.
DPP told the court that there are several applications to be made including that of extradition to the US so as to face murder charged.
The court heard that preliminary investigations revealed that Kangethe violently attacked and repeatedly stabbed the lady on the face and neck area causing catastrophic injuries that led to her death .
Thereafter, he returned to Kenya and went into hiding where he allegedly kept constant communication using various telephone numbers with his friends back in the US and a few of his family and friends here in Kenya.
According to the detectives, he has no fixed abode since after he fled the US he has not been seen at his home in Thogoto, Kiambu County.
Kang’ethe did not object the application to detain him pending further investigations.
Magistrate Zainab Abdul allowed the Prosecution to detain him at Muthaiga police station noting that there was no objection to the prosecution’s application and that the offence was serious.
“There being no objection and owing to the fact that DPP wants to extradite the suspect and the seriousness of this matter the accused is hereby detained at Muthaiga police Station,” she ruled.
The matter will be mentioned on March 4.
