The court has closed a 1.9 billion shillings asset recovery case against former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his children, and others. This decision followed an out-of-court settlement between Obado and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for 235 million shillings.
Previously, the high court had allowed the commission to seize Obado’s assets, including his residential property at Loresho Ridge and three high-end cars. Obado, his four children, and businessman Jared Peter Odonyo had been prohibited from transferring these assets.
In the settlement agreement with the EACC, the former governor consented to relinquish the Loresho Ridge house, valued at 40 million shillings, the commercial Block Sunrise Centre in Suna East, valued at 88 million shillings, and five-storey residential blocks under construction, valued at 57.6 million shillings. Additionally, the EACC will auction two apartments at Greenspan valued at 18 million shillings, a mansion, and two other properties, totaling 235.6 million shillings. Two Land Cruisers are also set to be auctioned.
The agreement states, “The defendants have offered to surrender, and the commission has accepted to receive, eight properties and two motor vehicles at a current market value of 235.6 million shillings to be disposed of by public auction.” The commission noted it granted the defendants the benefit of the doubt regarding certain unverified tenders for supply of consumable items, acknowledging that some work had been satisfactorily completed.
