Wajir, Kenya — September 24, 2025
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned acts of disrespect toward Kenya’s national flag, vowing strict action against those responsible after a video emerged showing individuals — believed to be supporters of Somalia’s Mogadishu City FC — stepping on and kicking the Kenyan flag at Nyayo Stadium during a CAF Champions League match.
The footage that sparked outrage shows two young men allegedly trampling the Kenyan flag following a preliminary match between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City FC. The match, held at Nyayo Stadium, ended with a 3-1 victory for Kenya Police.
Speaking during the “Jukwaa la Usalama” security tour in Wajir, Murkomen emphasized that the desecration of national symbols is more than just offensive — it is a violation of the law.
He reminded the public of the National Flags, Emblems and Names Act, which governs how Kenya’s symbols should be treated and prescribes penalties for misuse.
Murkomen urged the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to ensure the law is enforced and those responsible are held accountable.
He warned that disrespect toward symbols of national unity and pride will not be tolerated, stressing the seriousness of the violation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has been tasked to investigate the incident, gather evidence, identify the culprits, and pave the way for legal proceedings.
Mogadishu City Club (MCC), whose fans are implicated, has issued a public apology, calling the behavior “unfortunate” and pledging full cooperation with authorities.
Murkomen’s statements point to broader implications:
The incident has sparked national debate over the enforcement of laws protecting national symbols.
There is concern among Kenyans that such acts, if left unpunished, could erode national unity and respect for national identity.
The CS insists on equal application of the law, regardless of whether the offenders are Kenyan citizens or foreigners.
CS Murkomen’s remarks reflect a zero-tolerance stance toward the desecration of Kenya’s national symbols. With investigations underway and public pressure mounting, the government appears poised to act decisively. As the legal process unfolds, many Kenyans will be watching closely to see whether justice is done and what consequences will follow.
