The Kiambu High Court has directed that 15 officers accused of killing two Indian nationals, Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan and Mohammed Zaid Sami, alongside with their taxi driver, Nicodemus Mwania Mwange, to undergo mental assessment before entering their plea.
The suspects, former officers of the disbanded Special Services Unit (SSU), will be held at the Kiambu Police Station until their plea is taken. The case will be mentioned on June 25th before the High Court for the plea-taking process.
According to the charge sheet approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the 15 individuals each face three counts of murder. They are accused of murdering the three victims on the night of July 22nd and 23rd, 2022, near Ole Sereni Hotel along Mombasa Road in Nairobi County, along with others not currently before the court.
During a hearing in March, the first witness testified that the accused were placed at the crime scene. Officer Kennedy Ndeto, part of the investigation team from the Internal Affairs Unit, told Principal Magistrate Gedion Kiage at Kahawa Law Courts that the accused were tracked from Mombasa Road to Aberdares Forest.
Ndeto stated that tracking logs showed the vehicle used by the accused entered Aberdares National Park through the Treetops Gate at 6:34 pm.
The investigation team tracked the vehicle from the Old Nairobi area, where the disbanded SSU offices were located, to Aberdares Forest. Ndeto added that call data records placed the accused in various areas of interest, including the SSU offices, along the Nairobi-Nyeri road at Muiga in Nyeri, and in Aberdares National Park.
