Two police officers accused of allegedly selling firearms and ammunition to bandits in Laikipia County have been detained for three days for police to conclude investigations.
The officers; Joel Githaiga and Martin Murimi will be detained until 25 April following an application by the police to investigate them.
According to the miscellaneous application, the two officers attached to ASTU Company allegedly sold firearm and ammunition which is believed to have been used to commit crimes of murder and banditry within Laikipia County and the adjacent counties.
“That other suppliers and buyers of the ammunition are still at large and there is need to hold the suspect, conduct further investigations and make more arrests,” read the application.
In affidavit by Nicholas Njoroge, who is the investigating officer, three metallic boxes containing 750 rounds of ammunition each, 15 small metallic boxes containing 25 rounds each and 33 were uncovered in an empty metallic box.
The officers through lawyer Danstan Omari did not object to the application by the police to detain them but Omari requested the Joel be escorted to hospital for medical checkup.
“Joel is a sharp shooter and is ready to cooperate with the investigations, he has high blood pressure and is diabetic,” Omari told the court.
The prosecution was did not object and urged the court to detain the one at Kilimani and the other one at Muthaiga police station.
Magistrate Simon Themu ordered OSC Kilimani to comply with the directives and take Joel to hospital.
The matter will be mentioned on 25 April this year for further directions and to confirm status of investigations.
