The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has ordered all gaming operators to stop the usage of ‘speed dial’ feature on all internet browsers in line with the High court order or face legal action.
BCLB Director Peter Mbugi in a letter dated February 16, to the operators says failure to comply with the directive will lead to contempt of court charges against them.
“We make reference to the Board’s circular REF: BCLB 8/71 VOL.1 (157) dated 11th August 2023 on the use of ‘speed dial’ feature on the internet browsers. We further make reference to a court order issued by the High Court at Nairobi in the above-stated matter on 16th January 2024. This is therefore to direct that you cease with immediate effect, the use of the ‘speed dial’ feature on all internet browsers.” reads the letter
The high court orders were issued in a petition filed by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek)
Cofek in the suit papers claimed the establishment of illegal use of a “Speed Dial” on various internet browsers is being used to advertise betting, lottery and gaming activities.
According to the organization, the illegal use of the speed dial is being used for dissemination of information which poses a great risk to consumers.
